Today, 15 years ago, Nintendo released the Nintendo 64 system to North American gamers.  Anyone have any favorite games?  Most hated?  Ideas why it wasn't a hit, at least on the level that Nintendo expected?

Well, looks like I'll be playing a lot of Waverace 64 this weekend. Smiley

The reason for it not selling like the Snes I think, is silly because of the sparse release schedule along with spotty third party support.
Love the system myself though as I'm someone who doesn't care about the good/bad game ratio as long as a system has a good amount of standout games.

A couple of favorites would be, ignoring Waverace for a moment: Blast Corps, Majora's Mask and Starfox 64.
So glad to be playing OOT on the 3DS right now. So much love was put into the game. Smiley
Can't wait to pick up Starfox as well and if there's any justice left in the world, we'll get Majora's Mask remade next year...

I was heading into PC gaming territory by then - along with everything else that the PC could offer -but there's no denying there were some classic N64 games.  One problem I kept hearing about the N64 was the cartridge format. While really robust and reliable, the costs of a game on cart were crazy - around £60 ($95 USD approx.) wasn't unheard of.

I was an extremely late comer to the N64 platform, finally got one in 2009, and have Mario 64 and Golden Eye 64.  I really enjoy Mario 64, I am sure the magic would have been much more special back in the day, before we had HD and PS3 and Xbox 360 and 3D TV's, but it was still great.

Games I love playing and still do occasionally on my N64 are:

Super Mario 64
Wave Race 64
Snowboarding Kids
Banjo Kazooie
Mario Kart 64

It was a fabulous system to own just for those games. But that's always been the thing about Nintendo consoles ..... they may not have the volume of games of other systems but they always have a few gems that make them irresistable and therefore must haves. Same goes for the Dreamcast with Soul Calibur, San Francisco 2049, the Powerstone games etc ...

It's still my favourite console. I have around 40ish games, maybe more. I really should get them counted up.

I might sound a bit boring but my favourite is the Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, WWF No Mercy, World Driver Championship, Shadowman, etc. So many awesome games. Some stinkers too of course. Carmageddon 64 maybe the most horrible game I've ever played. I still play it every so often because I get a perverse pleasure from how bad it is. Go figure.

Ocarina of time is quite simply the greatest video game ever made.

So many people slated the N64 when it was released but the truth is video games wouldnt be at the stage they are today without it. Nintendo did such an awesome job with it,id say the only downside to it was the launch and lack of games that were released at the time,we only had 3 on launch day in europe, mario 64 pilot wings and shadows of the empire (you gotta feel sorry for japan and america though as they only had mario 64 ready on launch day).

It was such a powerfull machine for its time and i think the main reason for the lack of support was simply the price of the games (i have some stickers on old games with a massive £80 price tag!!!). you cant argue with the price of the machine itself it was insane value for the power you got.

The nintendo 64 was and still is THE BEST CONSOLE EVER MADE.

The only problem I can see with the N64 is the time we had to wait between games and perhaps the rather limited number of games it got compared to other systems.

Yet, back in the day, no matter how many months we had to wait for the next game to arrive, once it did, it always seemed to be something really special.
And more often than not it would keep me busy for many months.
Perhaps not my favourite system of all time, but I certainly love the system and that generation still is my favourite one.
