The past couple of days I'm been contemplating ordering one of these new beauties.

With all the Photoshop work I do, it certainly would be a great tool to use, especially with the high specs and incredible screen.
I figure that photo merging separate scans would also take a fraction of the time compared to now, as I'm on a 4 year old Macbook Pro as we speak.

Really wondering what to do and obviously the only thing holding me somewhat back is the high cost.
With an update to 16gigs of RAM and the Applecare package (don't want to take the chance with this one), it comes to nearly €3000 which is quite a lot for any computer...

Still have about a day to decide if I should pull the trigger if I want to get it in time for my summer vacation in about 4 weeks, since it will take that long for it to be ready...

Speaking from the point of view of someone who went from a crap computer (my desktop was "new" in about 2001 for anyone who is interested) to a newer laptop with a nice screen and simply more power, I say go for it.  You only live once, enjoy it.  Besides, the time you would save would allow you to do other things that you are interested in.

The only problem is that I don't really need one right now.
Sure my current Macbook Pro is now 4 years old, but it's still more than happy to keep up with all the abuse I throw at it, even after all these years.
For the past year I have started feeling that I would enjoy a little more power though as I'm always multitasking to the extreme, which naturally takes it's toll on performance when doing thing in Photoshop as well for instance.

But yeah, like you said: you only live once.
That's actually something that went through my mind several times when I was at work yesterday.
If you keep putting things off, it's either never going to happen or you'll end up wishing you did it sooner.

In the end I pulled the trigger and ordered one last night. Did add the 16gig memory option and the Applecare plan as well though as I'm sure the extra memory at least will be something I'll get a lot of use out of.
Still a lot of money though.

Who knows, perhaps I could do a donation drive! That's always a good idea. ;P
How does "Pay for meppi's new overpriced laptop and get the new magazine releases a week before anyone else" sound? lol

Congrats on the new laptop!  I am sure you are going to love using it and enjoy your general time on it a lot more than your old one (not just editing mags but just surfing the net, watching movies and such too).  I think the extra memory purchase now will probably save you quite a bit later (after market is not always better versus it coming from the factory all set up).

I think a donation drive would rock!  I mean, we could even "use" some of the money to cover hosting of the site, hosting of the releases with a 3rd party AND cover your new laptop giving backers the releases a week early, at least.  I mean it is good enough for everyone else, right?

Well not to mention that the memory can't be upgraded later on with this particular system.

Everything is soldered straight to the motherboard...
It really is a piece of work this one you should check out the little presentation movie they put together for it:

I'm pretty sure I'll end up loving it just as much and probably even more than my current system.
Like I've said in the past, I've been using this one for 4 years now and love the overall experience.
Had 2 hardware hick-ups which were both taken care of in a very professional manner, but hey, I use my system every single day from when I wake up till I go back to bed, unless I'm at work.
And I'm a pretty heavy user at that, so I'm amazed at how it's holding up.
Then again, the lure of bigger and better is always very compelling isn't it.

If I wasn't 100% satisfied, I certainly wouldn't be throwing this kind of money at a new system.
Heck, just look at how quickly I switched from the PS3 to the 360 (due to many many reasons on Sony's behalf), even though I didn't enjoy the original XBox much at all.
I have no trouble stating my opinion if I think something it terrible. But I do love talking about things I love a lot more. Wink

Oh and before anyone freaks out.
Yes, those mentions of donations from me and Carl are meant in a sarcastic way. We certainly don't plan on scheming any visitors into giving us money.  Grin

That is one awesome looking system.  If I had the money, I would buy one, it just looks so much nicer than anything on the Windows side of the market right now.

Yes, those comments about donations and such (especially the "donate and get releases a week before anyone else" ones) were whole heartedly tongue in cheek.  While we have permission to release the mags we do here, we could never see asking the fans to finance their release in any way other than simply downloading them and enjoying them.
