The update for this week will run a little late.
Main reason being that I have another shift change tomorrow, so that means I won't be home at all, besides for a 6 hour nap. :-/

Mean machines issue 6 needs a little more work right now.
And since we never rush these kinds of things, it might be Saturday or Sunday until it's online.

After a long break we return to the Mean Machines catalogue with the March 1991 issue.
Our first article is on of the best under-rated shooters on the Mega drive, namely Gynoug. Staying in boom of the shooter genre also take a look at Aero Fighters, also released on the Mega Drive.
Then we take look at a fan favourite Capcom game on the classic Nintendo Entertainment System: DuckTales.
Finally we look at one of the most fun 4-player experiences on the NES: Gauntlet II.

Mean Machines 6 - march 1991 (UK)

Gynoug (Mega Drive)
Aero Fighters (Mega Drive)
DuckTales (NES)
Gauntlet II (NES)

The complete magazine can be downloaded in its full resolution by clicking here and can also be downloaded for portable devices by clicking here.

Great issue, as usual, Mean Machines was a great mag that I never heard of till I met you, meppi.

For those in the US/North America, you will probably recognize Gynoug as Wings of Wor, which I think was never officially released (though I wanted a copy of it badly).  It looks quite reminiscent of Lords of Thunder on the Turbo Duo, doesn't it?

I'm sure it did get a release in the US, but probably a limited one.
Never hear much talk about this game for some reason, which makes me believe it wasn't all that widespread to begin with.
I was lucky enough to pick it up back in the day and loved everything about it.
It doesn't really have anything exceptional in the way that it plays or anything, but for some reason it just feels so right.
Hard to explain really.

The design truly was way out there, that's for sure. Wink
The thing is, I don't know how Masaya is connected to Red entertainment or Hudson, or even Renovation/Telenet, but I either read something or listened to a podcast talking about certain connections this company had to one of the above, if I'm not mistaken.
Something about certain people starting up their own company, but with my terrible memory I can't remember how exactly everything fits together.

if I only could remember who talked about this stuff...

One of my older cousins had Gynoug when it first came out. I remember looking at the packaging and thinking "Gynoug? What the hell is this?" Turned out to be one of the best shoot em ups I played.

Time sure flies. So fast in fact that it's already time for our December feature of Back in Time.
We begin with a look at the Amiga version of RoboCop 3, which strays quite far from the expected run and gun side-scrolling gameplay. Our second Amiga game is First Samurai, which was later ported to the SNES as well.
Then we look at how well Smash TV was adapted to the Commodore 64 from the arcade.
And finally we look at the NES version of Maniac Mansion, and see how it stacks up to the previous versions, with or without a microwaved hamster.

RoboCop 3 review (Amiga) from issue 51 of Ace.
Maniac Mansion review (NES) from issue 15 of Mean Machines.
Smash TV review (Commodore 64) from issue 79 of Zzap!64.
First Samurai review (Amiga) from issue 8 of Amiga Power.

To read about not only these games but the complete selection of featured magazines this month, don't forget to click the link to the full feature below.

Actually the Back in Time features are all Neil's hard work. Wink
The only thing I do on them is put a link in here or there.

I like to think of the articles as a team effort. I couldn't produce them if it weren't for the hard work of Andynick and Mort (they provide many scans/info), Galaxy from Amiga Magazine Rack (scans), and, of course, meppi for support on the HTML pages and links.

But, yes, much nostalgia in the articles, which is the reason why I love doing them so much.

Due to time constraints it's been a while since the last magazine was finished.
We hope to make up for this with the latest release of the Official Sega Saturn Magazine.
The first preview is for the very underrated puzzle game Baku Baku Animal.
The we jump into the arcade with Fighting Vipers which would get a terrific Saturn port later on.
We then go into the cover story with WipEout and finish up this update
with the sequel to a Mega Drive classic action RPG: The Story of Thor 2.

You're absolutely right, nothing says Christmas gaming like Christmas Nights  Smiley. I played a friend's copy briefly year's ago and it was a lot of fun. I don't own the game yet but I'm sure I'll get a it eventually.
I have just recently bought Sega Ages volume 1 for the Saturn and Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast though so I'm pretty set for gaming over Christmas.  Smiley

A copy of Christmas NiGHTS should be very cheap about now I figure.
Since NiGHTS is one of my favorite games of all time, if not my absolute favorite, I have both Japanese and EU versions of the regular and the Christmas NiGHTS games. Smiley

Another game that just screams Christmas to me is Shenmue, but I see you already mentioned the second chapter. Wink
Although I do feel the first one feels much more in sync with the holidays than the second one.

Yeah, Shenmue is another great game to play at Christmas. It's so cool seeing all the Christmas decorations and that guy dressed up like Santa Claus walking around Dobuita.

Great memories.  Smiley

Absolutely.

I actually vowed to finally replay Shenmue fully in the coming Christmas vacation, but I didn't account for the silly amount of games that was coming out this holiday season.
For instance, any other time of year I would already have put in 50+ hours into Mario Kart 7, but right now I'm only closing in on the 5 hour mark due to playing way too much other stuff as well.
Still need to go back to Xenoblade which I adore, same as with Skyward Sword.
Only at world 6 of Mario Land 3D and I've just started batman Arkham City, Saints Row 3 and Dark Souls.
Not to mention getting a 360 with two dozen of games along with a big load of incredible downloadable games!

It's just too much.

What a weird thing to be complaining about, I know. Wink

I know how you feel, so many amazing game's but so little time to play them all.
I'm really looking forward to some great gaming over Christmas though and hope to get Skyward Sword (and a Wii remote plus) and New Super Mario Bros. Wii too. Smiley

Skyward Sword is amazing. Smiley
Starts of a bit slow, but picks up really nicely by the time you open up the second section.
Even though there are such a huge number of incredible games out, I think it'll end up being my personal GOTY.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is great fun as well.
Have only played it single player and 2player, but I can imaging 3 and 4 player being an absolute blast as well.

Have to say that Super mario Land 3D blows it away for me. Huge surprise as I did't know what to expect from that title and thought it would be an average platformer. So glad the impressions I got from screenshots and movies were completely wrong in that regard.

As we move into 2012 we also start a new year in our Back in Time series as we look back to January 1992.
Our first article looks at the Amiga version of Another World, which was reviewed in Zero issue 27.
Sticking with the Amiga, we look at the Celtic Legends from issue 9 of Amiga Power.
Then we check out the very first issue of Total! with the review for the NES classic Solstice.
And for our final article, we look at another new magazine with the premier issue of Sega Force and its review of Speedball 2 for the Mega Drive.

Another World review (Amiga) from issue 27 of Zero.
Solstice review (NES) from issue 1 of Total!.
Celtic Legends review (Amiga) from issue 9 of Amiga Power.

Looks like we'll miss our MEGA update today, which sadly is my fault.
But everything should be up tomorrow.
Had to create a couple new images which were more complicated to get just right, and as I hate doing a mediocre job, I ended up deep in Photoshop till past 2AM for the last couple of days.
Still need to tweak the new css code as well, but everything is looking good.

Following a long rest, MEGA, the classic Mega Drive magazine by Future Publishing, is back for the second issue.
You might notice that as we move into the future we will start offering an even higher number of download options per magazine as well as releasing scans at their maximum resolution. We will slowly work through the back catalogue and make all three download options available for almost all of the past releases as well.
For our MEGA 2 online previews we first take a look at the Dominik Diamond interview. From there, we take a look at 3 Mega Drive reviews.
The first one is for Side Pocket, then we look at the timeless classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and finally we zoom in on Thunder Storm FX for the Mega CD.

We're going through some redesign choices in the dark corners of the site, so if something isn't working like it should, please let us know.
It might have to do with the cached version mixing with the new one, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Wink

This week we look back at Sega's swansong in the hardware wars with Dreamcast Magazine issue 2.
We have quite a lot of articles up for this one since we launched the site with our Dreamcast anniversary special back in 2009, so let's get on with it. Our first articles are for Buggy Heat and Speed Devils. Sticking with driving games, but with a twist, we look at Pen Pen Trilcelon, Red Dog and finally TrickStyle.
After the barage of racers we move on to an iconic Dreamcast fighting game : Soul Calibur.
And the final game is the very original Toy Commander.

You might have noticed a couple of 502 errors tonight.
It seems that our cloud flare solution has a bit of a problem connecting to the servers right now, so I turned it off till they get things sorted out.
Seems like the cache reset itself a lot sooner than stated as they mention it taking at least 2 hours.

Could still be a bit shaky for the rest of the night. Luckily it's past 2AM. Wink
