I was on the Retromag site downloading copies of EGM (well it's better than scanning my own copies) when I came across something in EGM 62 page 22 to be exact. It was something frankly I forgot about it seems way back in 1993 I had written a letter to the editor about how I could not find a copy of Phantasy Star 1 let alone a SMS to run it on and how Sega should redo Phantasy Star 1 , and of how their response was to get a letter writing campaign started so Sega would do something.

Of course we all know it took until the GBA for Sega to finally create the Phantasy Star Collection. As for your truly I did manage to get my elusive copy of Phantasy Star 1, in a trade deal for some 2600 games and $20 about a year later. I actually own 2 SMS, 1 I found and the other a kid sold me for $10. Get a load of this they are both different one has Hang On built in the other Snail Maze.

Well I got credited in RetroGamer for helping Damien out with the Official Sega Saturn special they did a couple years ago when I was still on RM.
The scan got posted even though I was against it, didn't even find out until long after: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4050

I also got my letter posted in CVG after they had gotten rid of Paul Davies along with his whole crew, in the process turning the magazine into a soulless entity somewhat related to gaming. Trying to reel in the casual gamer by creating articles about, well pretty much nothing.
Complained about big changes to the magazine as well as the loss of the incredible freeplay retro section, but got laughed at by the new crew.
Oh well, guess they are now working as garbagemen somewhere. Tongue

No way meppi, those scans of yours were done without your consent? Wow, that sucks. I do recall reading that feature though, and though it was cool. But it really sucks that somebody at retromags gave the OK behind your back.

On the bright side, it was a very cool feature, as I loved reading about the behind the scenes of my favourite mag from the editors themselfs.

Which brings me to this question; Does it still bother you of this being done without your permission anymore as it ended up being a cool feature, and that without your scans it may not of been done?

Also, do you have that mag with your letter still? If so, you have to do a quick scan for me meppi, please and thank you. You know... because I'm your biggest fan & all. Cheesy

Oh, and CVG had a retro section. Shocked That's very awesome. Too bad it got dropped. And don't you hate it when no talent people get too much power? (Happens all the time, and sometimes they stay in power for too long too) I mean, how can you not spot these losers? This is the worst when no talent bums get the job instead of the talented ones... because the head honcho is a no talent lucky loser himslef.

I think the only time I appeared in a games mag was in MEGA issue 5. I had created a code breaker for the Mega Drive game Bulls vs Lakers and sent it in to them (this effectively meant that you coud enter certain codes to have any line up in the NBA finals. It was first in the tips section that month.

No no, the feature itself I was fine with.
Damien who freelances a lot for Retro Gamer asked me if I could help him out with those scans, and at the time I had only done a couple of OSSM scans, so I set out to scan about 600 pages of articles throughout the whole set so they could chose the best ones.
Was glad to be able to help with that.

The problem I have is with the RG scan being posted online like that.
It was supposed to just be a private scan until he got the magazine himself, just so he could see that the RM name appeared in there, since it was such a big dream to appear in print with the site back then.
I found out over a year later and by accident that the scan I did, (which I shouldn't have in the first place I guess) was posted online to brag about being featured in there, even though I made it clear I only did it to make him happy and didn't want it online at all.  :-/

Not really sure if I still have the CVG issue where my letter got printed. Don't even know which one it is either.
I wasn't very careful with keeping those issues after the Paul Davies crew left tbh.

Oh yeah, CVG had a great little retro section starting with issue 173 if I'm not mistaken, which ran until Paul Davies left and the mag got redesigned.
It was in the special freeplay section, which also featured tips and letters and later on news items and rumours as well.
Here's a preview: http://members.tele2.nl/zzapback/cvg.html

Funny fact: even though the freeplay section was printed on the cheap yellow/brown paper, it was actually more expensive to use than the regular paper used in the main magazine. Wink

Yeah, that Retro Section in CVG was great. Just the one page, but so unlike anything at the time.  It was called the Retro Cabin and was written by Keith Ainsworth, who also produced the Retrogamer fanzine back in the mid 1990s.

Not really sure if I still have the CVG issue where my letter got printed. Don't even know which one it is either.

I may have this issue. Around 1999, I'd imagine?

Should be around then I think.
Don't remember exactly what I wrote and it'll probably turn out to be embarrassing when I read it back today. Wink
Didn't know what was going on with the magazine at the time and wondered why everything was changing in such a way that made me lose interest so quickly.
Could be early 2000 as well.

I got a letter printed in an issue of Nintendo Official Magazine in what must have been 1999/2000, shortly after WCW/NWO Revenge came out. Basically sucking up to them saying their 90% score was correct.
Recently got a mini-review of Donkey Kong for the Gameboy printed in Nintendo Gamer, before it shut down last month. Sad
